Spring is in full swing, and with it comes flowers, warmer weather and the dreaded allergies. As those afflicted will know, grass, dust and other environmental allergens are significantly more present this time of year, but are you aware our pets can be allergic to them as well? May is Pet Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, so we wanted to take the opportunity to talk a bit about these seasonal ailments and some ways to keep your pet feeling their best!
The symptoms of allergies in pets are actually very similar to ours and may include:
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Watery, itchy and/or red eyes
- Itchy, flaky and/or red skin
Now that you know about our new professional grooming services here at West Hills Veterinary Center, you can also make use of the medicated baths and hypoallergenic shampoos that we offer for any especially sensitive pets! Beyond the fur, we can also offer ear plucking and other grooming services that are beneficial to pets with skin and ear issues that become irritated with the change in season.
If said ear issues persist, they could be acute or chronic inflammation or infections. As a solution, we at West Hills Veterinary Centre offer Laser Therapy, a therapeutic light manipulation that can result in improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling.
We don’t want your pet to have to deal with the full impact of allergies orear problems (or both!) this spring, so make sure to give us a call at 252-210-6482 if you suspect they’re suffering from either! Your West Hills Veterinary Centre veterinarian will be able to give you a rundown of the many available treatment options, including medication and diet changes for allergies, and discuss which option would be best for your pet.
